大卫·柯鲁克，1935年加入英国共产党。曾参加西班牙内战中的国际纵队英国旅作战。1940年在中国成都与生于成都的加拿大传教士之女、加拿大多伦多大学心理学硕士伊莎白相识相爱。随后二人在伦敦结婚，伊莎白加入英国共产党。1947年，柯鲁克夫妇由英国共产党介绍回到中国，对中共解放区的土地改革进行调查研究。夫妻俩在河北武安县十里店村深入生活，采访搜集了大量的第一手资料，后来写成了极有社会学价值的《十里店——中国一个村庄的革命》与《十里店——中国一个村庄的群众运动》，被英国许多社会学教师指定为学生必读书。1948年，应中共方面邀请，柯鲁克夫妇留在中国帮助培养外语人才，成为参加创办北京外国语学院的最早的外籍教师。
